Our humble beginnings...

The Walton County Art League began in 1965 in the home of Mary Vinson with a small group of women who enjoyed painting oils together.  Their first art show was that spring at the Women's Club and in the fall they presented their work at the Walton County Fair.  In 1965 Mary Vinson and Bettye Copeland chaired the first art shat at the Woman's club in DeFuniak Springs.  The show was a success.   That fall, the Art League held its first show at the fair.  Mrs Alice Kennedy's old paint-box was used as a display that became the showstopper.  The room, now known as the Mary Vinson room, originally had a dirt floor with sawdust.  According to Mrs. Vinson "they had just moved the cows out and the flies almost ate us up."

We have since grown, and our members use a wide variety of media and forms.  Some of us are beginners, others accomplished artists, but we all share a common interest in the arts.  Our goals are to expand the awareness and importance of art, encourage anyone interested in it, promote the fact that creativity feeds the soul, and share with others the enjoyment of art.

The WCAL was incorporated and qualified in 1972, and maintains its non-profit status.  Since 1977 numerous works of art have been donated to and displayed at the City Hall in DeFuniak Springs.  Membership is open to the public and new members are always welcome.
